The Most Overused Word In Sports

There are many words and phrases used in sports. They are used heavily in the broadcast booth, on podcasts, by fans, and during debates of various subjects in the sports industry. Some of them have become completely synonymous and exclusive to sports. We’ve all heard them. They are words and phrases like; whatever is best for the team, God willing, it’s a fast game, or one game at a time. However there is one word that has turned into a acronym that is the most overused word in sports. Not everyone can be one, yet we just stamp it on anyone who has a great career, season, or moment. Doing so makes it unfair to the true holders of the crown. That word is GOAT. The meaning of that word in this context is Greatest Of All Time. If you want to have a real GOAT debate that’s fine, but let’s stop putting it on everyone who wins a championship, has a great season, or a good career. Teams social media people are just using it with anyone. Most recently we saw the goat emoji next to Nikola Jokic after he led his Denver Nuggets to this year’s NBA Title. Now, as good as Jokic is, he’s nowhere near true goat status in the history of the league. He could be one day, but today isn’t that day. It’s examples like this that are being used across the sports world from players to fans that is making it the most overused word in sports. It is widely considered that players like Michael Jordan, Tom Brady, and Wayne Gretzky are the GOATS of their respective sports. You can certainly have an argument putting other names in the hat for those titles, but let’s stop just putting GOAT next to every player because it’s the cool thing to do. Not everyone can be a greatest of all time. Have your arguments, rightfully crown someone when they stake their claim, but please for the love of the one’s that deserve the title, STOP handing it out like it’s a bowl full of candy on Halloween night.
