PGA Tour - LIV Golf: Enemies Unite
The news broke and blinded sided everyone in the sport from players, to sports talk, to journalists, to the fans. The two companies were at each other’s throats from the beginning. It gave fans to have something to argue about in the sport for the first time since the Tiger vs Jack debate came onto the scene. Also, like most things these days, it even became political. However, my reaction here will not bring in a drop of politics, because, frankly…who gives a shit.
I think the union between the two is amazing for golf. It is yet to be determined how long or how well this marriage will last, but I think it is good for the sport and good for the fans. Even though LIV Golf hasn’t been around long enough to hit this scale, it could eventually have an NFL or NBA type merger success to it. I would like to see a little bit of both aspects of the game kept from each side. Clearly the most historic and important part, the Major Championships. I could also get onboard with more team style tournaments thrown into the yearly schedule.
Tiger Woods single-handedly brought this sport to the level it is at. I’ve been saying since all of this happened, the only way we ruin what he built is from within the family. The PGA Tour and LIV Golf going at each other had that feel to it, and now we can finally see if they can work together and take it to even higher heights. That would be amazing and I’m rooting for this to work, because I think, especially at the beginning it is going to make for some great TV! Every sport seems to be more compelling with a villain. We’ve already seen some of that with Patrick Reed and at times Bryson DeChambeau, but this could add a level of villain with the write spin that could really grab a lot more eyes and headlines. I think this could be really good for the sport and get more players and fans alike, but like I said at the beginning, the only thing that will ruin it is politics brought in on either side, or if we destroy ourselves from within.
