If I Could Go Back
People are asked this all the time. If you could go back in time and change what you do, what would you do? Especially if alongside the question you get the add in of, “knowing what you know now.” Sometimes it can be a fun thing to look at, and sometimes it can be a depressing thing to look back on. I’ve been recently speaking with people and specifically self reflecting on the career part of this little thought journey. I went to school for Journalism with an emphasis on Sports Journalism. I was also going for Psychology and Business. Other than wanting to play Professional Baseball, I wanted to write for Sports Illustrated or have my own radio sports talk show. Other parts of the dream back then was to also be a Sports Psychologist. All of these things seemed fitting because I played multiple sports, one at a very high level, and my passion off the field was still sports. However, now that I’ve gotten to know myself through the years of my adult life and hear what others think of me, that have gotten to know me, I realize those probably weren’t the best for who I’d become. I’m a bit bougie. I love wearing suits and the finer things in life. I love footwear, I collect watches, and sunglasses. I love golfing, shopping, and country clubs. The other thing I like to do is protect people and what they’ve worked for. I like to argue and I’m extremely organized both in my everyday life and mentally. Before I met my person I was looking at high-rise lofts and condos in the city. I know what my personal brand is and where my mind spends a lot of its time. I still love my sports, but if you’re asking me what I’d want my everyday all day to stick with, it probably wouldn’t be that. If I could go back and redo my career from the start knowing what I know now, it would be one of two things. The first one I’d have the most passion for and would fit who I am today would be a Corporate Lawyer, specifically Corporate Litigation without question! I’d want that to happen in one of 3 places starting in New York City, then Los Angeles, and finally in Chicago. The back-up plan if that didn’t or couldn’t happen would be a Sports Agent, who these days, does to a lot of things pertaining to a lot of legal things. I’d still get my sports fix by being in the business and the negotiating part working on contracts and extensions. Even just thinking of the 2 of these things, the Corporate Litigation part and all of its crappy parts of the job still excite me to no end. What would you do if you could go back in time knowing what you know now about yourself; your strengths, weaknesses, passions, etc?
