I know this is article is going to be kind of ironic considering I’m using the free internet to throw my opinions out on a multitude of subjects in the sports world and sometimes in life. However, unlike a lot of you or the sports fans around the world; I’ve actually been on the radio, called games, and been paid to write for a few sports websites in my lifetime. Not as important, but not to mention I’ve played a sport at a higher level than all but 1% of people.
In the sports world today, unfortunately everyone has an opinion that can reach thousands, hundreds of thousands, and sometimes millions of people. This has made everyone believe their opinion is educated and matters more than the next person, or even the professionals in the field. Let me start by saying, you don’t and it doesn’t. I don’t and mine doesn’t either, before you try to test my theory on that too.
Back in the day you had to actually be someone to have your opinion read or heard by an audience of any size beyond your friend circle or the people that live in your house. You had to be a coach or athlete, TV host, a radio host, a commentator of some kind, a journalist with a job at a publication of some kind. If you weren’t one of those, you had to be lucky enough to wait on hold during a sports talk show and hope they had the time to let you have 30 seconds to say or ask something. The only other option was write in to your local newspaper or a magazine and give them your two cents worth in the hopes they put it in the section of that publication dedicated to random people sending stuff in and even that wasn’t much. Now, any moron with a computer, tablet, or a phone can not only write their opinions, but they can great a video channel, or Social Media account, or podcast to be seen or heard to throw it out there thinking it’s the best opinion in sports history. It’s the people with very little experience doing any of that, and most of the time it’s people with very little true knowledge of sports and how it works. It’s pure; what they see on TV or what they “think” is going on by people far smarter and far more talented than them. It can be a person who “blew out their knee” or they “woulda went pro.” We all know them. Maybe one out of a million does that story really align for. Guess what, you sucked, you were never going to be paid to play anything, and it didn’t have shit to do with your physical health. Also guess what, you really don’t know anything about the day-to-day running of a player, team, organization, or sport. So, now your opinion is as important and talented as the possibility of you going pro at any level in any sport, TRASH. The evolution of Social Media has brought the true intelligence of sports talk, sports opinion, and knowledge so far down in the gutter it’s embarrassing. Unfortunately, everyone has an opinion and a voice, and very few are worth a crap. Yes, even mine who’s actually been inside the business in some way, shape, or form, even in multiple ways. If this hurts your feelings, I’m not sorry. The truth hurts sometimes but, thanks for reading.
