CFB: Week 2 Had Some Get Embarrassed & Some That Should Be
Week two of the 2024 College Football season was a very interesting one. It was a wild one, even by the standards of college football. We had some teams that were absolutely embarrassed, and some that should be embarrassed even after getting a victory.
The previously ranked #5 Notre Dame Fighting Irish were definitely embarrassed as they paid Northern Illinois out of the MAC $1.4 million to come to South Bend and they upset the Irish by a final of 16-14. That has to be one of the bigger upsets in history. That’s rough for a fanbase that lives off of the success of their grandfather’s Notre Dame programs. Now, let’s go east to Ann Arbor, Michigan as the defending National Cheatpions were absolutely embarrassed by the Texas Longhorns. Yes, Texas is a very good team, and it isn’t a shock that they won. What makes this an embarrassment for the Wolverines, is that it looked like Michigan’s team didn’t even show up to defend their home-field. They got slapped around like a small school and only got in the end zone during trash time late in the game. The final from the Big House was 31-12 when Michigan WAS ranked tenth while the Longhorns WERE sitting at number three. It is clear now that the Colorado Buffaloes don’t belong in anything except a Tik Tok dance video. They went into Nebraska thinking they mattered and got pushed to floor and kicked over and over again while they were down. The Cornhuskers embarrassed Primetime and his entire team by halftime and there was nothing the Sanders family could do to save themselves from the embarrassment and reality that they just aren’t that good, and Nebraska is coming. The final score in Lincoln was 28-10. Unfortunately I think Head Coach Deion Sanders is delusional as to what he is as an actual coach, and where his kids actually are in the pecking order of talent in the sport.
Now were are going to move on to the teams that won, but should be embarrassed. I know they say, a win is a win, and the final score doesn’t matter. However, in College Football, style points matter, and playing close games against far inferior opponents matter, and isn’t a good look. That’s where these teams fall after this week. Number 15 Oklahoma was supposed to discard of winless and unranked Houston with ease. Instead, they stumbled to a 16-12 victory over the Cougars who now fall to 0-2. That’s too low scoring and too close against a team like that for a Sooners ball club that wants to compete for titles this season. The Oregon Ducks who were ranked seventh and want to compete for a Natty barely made it past Boise State in Eugene by a final of 37-34. That’s two week’s in a row the Ducks looked less than impressive. The Penn State Nittany Lions want to win a Big Ten title and compete for a National Championship, but they had a scare of their own from another MAC school not really known for football. PSU who was ranked number eight and were in Happy Valley won a close game against Bowling Green by a final of 34-27, and that winning score came in the 4th quarter. Not great optics for the committees, and the Falcons may have shown what it takes to beat Penn State. Last but not least is a game that finished with a score of 42-16, which doesn’t look close, and it does look like it was a blowout that was completely controlled by the winning team. Not so fast folks. The number four Alabama Crimson Tide were crapping their pants for three quarters against a South Florida team a lot of people didn’t even know existed. It took the Crimson Tide a 28 point fourth quarter for them to come out on the winning side against a team they should have easily beat by 40-plus. Again, these teams got the win, but in College Football, you need more than that. Committees look at strength of schedule, and one of the things they look at is, if you played a bottom feeder and struggled, that could be the indicator you don’t belong in the top tier when going to the next level, or trying to compete for all the marbles. It was definitely an interesting, exciting week of College Football, and exactly why I like it way more than the NFL.
