We now know who will be playing in the College Football Playoffs this year for a chance at being a National Champion. The 1-seed are the undefeated Big Ten Champion Michigan Wolverines. Nothing to see here. The 2-seed is the undefeated Pac-12 Champion Washington Huskies. Still nothing to see here. The 3-seed is the one loss Big 12 Champion Texas Longhorns. They are fully deserving as they did win their conference title and beat Alabama IN Tuscaloosa. The 4th and final seed is NOT the undefeated ACC Champion Florida State Seminoles like you’d expect. I mean, no undefeated Power 5 conference champ has ever been left out of the playoffs…until now. The committee chose money and brand over wins and losses on the field of play. Is this the worst snub in the sport’s history?
Alabama lost to Texas, so they don’t deserve to be in over the Longhorns. I think we can all agree to that. The Crimson Tide won their conference championship, but so did FSU. Bama got slapped around in their own house, but Florida State didn’t lose a single game all season. Alabama needed an act of God with their starters to defeat SEC foe Auburn who is 6-6. The Seminoles didn’t need a prayer like that even with a backup quarterback. The Florida State Seminoles became the first team ever in the Power 5 to go undefeated, win their conference championship, and not get into the playoffs. If this was Clemson again with this exact same scenario, I’d be willing to bet any amount of money that the Tigers would be in. I don’t want to hear about how they are a different team with their starting QB, because they still won EVERYTHING put in front of them at the Power 5 level. In 2014 Ohio State was given the chance with a third string QB and a loss, and they went on one of the greatest finishing runs to a season in sport history. Why wasn’t FSU given a similar respect? Easy, it isn’t about integrity, eye test, or whatever else you’d like to throw in there. It is about money and big brands. That is it, plain and simple. The games didn’t matter. What happened on the field didn’t matter. The wins didn’t matter and Alabama’s loss didn’t matter. Sorry Florida State…buy your way into being a bigger brand, throw the winning out, and buy your way in to a title shot. I feel bad for those kids more than any other school in my lifetime. Alabama MIGHT be the better team head to head, maybe not. However, FSU deserved more than the Tide to be given a shot to show us.
